by Dawn Mitschele:
"Last summer, I received an email from an amazing local writer, lyricist and musician, Al Howard. He said he’d heard me in the studio at 91x and was wondering if I’d be down to collaborate. Turned out we are both from the beautiful garden state of New Jersey and we even went to high school 10 miles away from each other! He told me he was on a Greyhound journey, headed a dozen states away and wanted to send me some inspiration from the road to see if I could spin his words into song. I remember when I got the first set of lyrics and it felt like home. There was something in his words that was so reminiscent of all the writers I loved reading and studying as an English major in NYC. So, I sat down on my kitchen floor and wrote the first song. I sent it off to him less than an hour later…and our little project was born! Now known as Ivy & Stone, we’ve written a collection of songs over the past year and we are having our first show on March 28th at Java Joe’s. Here’s a little taste of what to expect:

Ivy & Stone Tarot
I've come to read the tarot of the skyline
To see the families overdressed at church
As if god was amused
By your finest suits and jewels
I've come / to walk / beside the hearse

I've overheard the gossip and conjectures
I've overheard your heartbeat in the night
Though we have no guilt to hide
We lost nature as our guide
I'm here to get her back on our side

So all
That once
Seemed safe
To us
Has all
But fallen
Into
Dust
And you’re
The only
One
Who I can trust

We try to govern all our best impulses
We blame and tame the animal within
Some days I wanna smoke
Drink fire down my throat
Some days I wanna have my way with sin

I know we do not always share a language
(though) We speak a midnight tongue by candlelight
And I tried to understand
And I held tight to your hand
And told you everything would be alright

So all
That once
Seemed safe
To us
Has all
But fallen
Into
Dust
And you’re
The only
One
Who I can trust

I'm here to harvest all my fears and burn them
To douse the field with gasoline and fire
And say a prayer to you
And catch hold of my youth
And when I say I tried / not be a liar

Cause love is a chameleon ever changing
And love is all the distance you can reach
Until we meet again
Caught in what may have been
Love is where we hide and all we seek
